Tasik Bukit Merah

“Get Ready for an Adrenalin-Pumping Ride”

Welcome to a lake that is steeped in stories and attractions. Built as early as 1906, Tasik Bukit Merah has the distinction of being the first man-made lake in Malaysia. It was built during the reign of Sultan Idris 1, the 28th ruler of Perak. This lake occupies about 40 sq km and straddles over two districts – Kerian and Larut Matang.

This lake also holds another interesting attraction – it is the only freshwater lake in Malaysia equipped with a railway crossing. As you can probably imagine, this is not your average train ride. Spanning 3.5 km, the railway track actually takes passengers across the lake, giving an absolutely beautiful view of the sprawling lake. The journey seems endless, magical and surreal as the train speeds past the lake area, surrounded by water all around. It definitely gives visitors an adrenalin-charged experience that is worth sharing over and over again.

The railway track is known as the Bukit Merah Lake Railway Bridge or Bukit Merah Marine Viaduct. It was completed in 2013 and replaces the old railway track. This viaduct is one part of the Government’s 329 km Electrification of Double Track Project (EDTP), which connects Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar and shortens the journey by half.

However, for those who are feeling anxious about travelling above water, rest assured. The viaduct stands at 12.5 metres above sea level and it is safely three metres above the maximum water level of the lake. So, sit back, enjoy the ride and the magnificent view!
